NETTalk: Using Evidence-Based Practices to Support Bereaved Children, Adults, and Families 7.13.23
07/13/2023 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM ET

Summary

The death of a loved one is one of the most common and most distressing life adversities that an individual may experience. While most bereaved individuals are resilient, research shows that, for some, bereavement can adversely affect long-term functioning in multiple life domains. Given that a “one-size-fits-all” approach to grief support is typically ineffective, a critical task for professionals is to effectively decide which type of grief support (e.g., peer support and/or individual therapy) and practice elements are most appropriate based on the unique needs and strengths of the individuals they serve, including their age/developmental stage, their relationship to the person who died, and the circumstances of the death. Dr. Julie Kaplow, a psychologist specializing in childhood grief, and Dr. Wendy Lichtenthal, a psychologist specializing in adult grief, will describe specific bereavement-related challenges that youth and adults typically face after the death of a loved one and review evidence-based practice elements that can support grieving people across the lifespan.
