Summary

At our September 19th NETGroup meeting at 3:00pm EST, we have invited Dana Gold, COO of JFCS Pittsburgh, to our NETGroup to talk about Broke the Game, a game designed to increase empathy for people struggling with poverty.

Broke the Game gives players the opportunity to understand the feelings of stress and brain-freeze that occur when struggling to make everyday decisions with limited financial resources. Broke the Game presents real-life situations to players who are all assigned roles based on the demographics of individuals living in poverty in the United States. Broke the Game has been used as a teaching tool by universities, as well as with school teachers, social workers, police officers, and volunteers who report gaining empathy and a greater understanding of the systems that make overcoming poverty so challenging.

Broke the Game was developed by Dana Gold with support from Carnegie Mellon University. It is both a board game and a downloadable app.

We will be using the app during our NetGroup meeting on September 19th, so please join us for this unique opportunity to learn about tool we all can use for educating everyone from our staff to our Board members!
